Absolutely Essential Machine Applique Supply List:

Your kit has essential things needed for successful machine applique, which includes:

  • The Ultimate Applique Reference Tool, the textbook for the class which will have patterns in it and step by step instructions.

  • Fusible web sheets

  • One self-threading needle

  • Fabrics that will be used for all sample pieces

  • One Schmetz Microtex sewing machine needle size 80/12

  • Starch

You’ll need to bring:

  • Sewing Machine with either a zigzag, blind hem stitch or blanket stitch, power cord and foot pedal.

  • Bring the manual for your sewing machine, so you know how to dial in the stitch you want to use!

  • An open toe applique foot for your sewing machine. If you are not 100% sure that you have this foot, or are not quite sure if you have it -- consult your local sewing machine dealer for your brand of sewing machine. It might be called by another name. Please do not arrive at class without this foot! It is essential in the finished product of this method to use this specific foot. If you try to just use what you have, you will be disappointed in the outcome and will waste your time at the workshop. If you want to see what the foot looks like, send me an email and I’ll send you a picture.

  • Thread -- 50 weight cotton thread – I use Aurifil 28 wt. Or Mettler 50 weight. (I do not use Aurifil 50 wt. for Machine Applique – it would be too thin) The color of the thread can be any color – but please bring one that is Dark, not light or white. Don’t worry about the color of the fabric.

  • Scissors (I prefer to use small scissors for cutting the applique shapes. My favorites are Elan Patchwork E6 scissors for fabric.) Please don’t bring 8” fabric shears, they’re too big to cut applique shapes.

  • A couple of Ball head pins

  • A pressing surface and an iron.

I’ll bring some Aurifil 28 weight threads and the Elan scissors for optional purchase.

If you’ve tried applique before and it didn’t work like you wanted it to, or you’re afraid to do applique - I promise this technique is easy and has a very shallow learning curve. You also get really beautiful results. I was once a complete beginner. I’ll bring many of my applique quilts with me as a part of my trunk show - which you will also be able to achieve.
